Tips to Help Fight Maskne

Wearing a face mask has become a part of our daily lives. Though it protects us it, continuous use of the mask has led to another emerging skin problem known as ‘Maskne’.

Talking and breathing under the mask traps in humidity, sweat, oil and food. This is an ideal environment for acne-causing bacteria and fungi to grow. Black heads and white heads also tend to develop more easily in these conditions, further aggravating the problem.

The constant friction and heat caused by the mask rubbing against the skin is another factor that contributes to Maskne.

How to prevent Maskne?

Modifying the daily skin routine can lower the chances of getting maskne. Here are a few tips that can be followed to minimize these skin breakouts:

Skin and oral Hygiene
  • Use a salicylic acid based face wash to remove the excess oil that’s built up
  • Rinse your mouth after meals
Moisturizer
  • Use a light gel based moisturizer
  • Avoid using ones with fragrance
  • Avoid using serums etc. Especially those that contain hyaluronic acid
Type of mask
  • Use a cotton mask whenever possible. The material is more breathable
  • Make sure you wash reusable masks with a gentle cleanser. Use only one washed mask per day
Make up
  • Avoid foundation and makeup entirely in the mask covered areas if you are prone to Maskne
