Scaling and Polishing

Our dentists typically recommend scaling and polishing as part of routine dental care and usually perform it during a regular dental check-up and cleaning appointment.

Scaling is important as it removes plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not removed regularly. During scaling, our dentist uses special instruments to gently scrape the plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces, both above and below the gumline.

Once the teeth are scaled and free of plaque and tartar, the next step is polishing. Polishing helps to remove any remaining stains and smoothen the tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque to accumulate. Our dentist uses a polishing device to apply a special toothpaste-like material to the teeth. The paste contains abrasive particles that gently polish the tooth surfaces, leaving them smooth and shiny.
